It's a normal day and I go ahead and turn on my computer, but instead of hearing the subtle sounds of fans followed by life's reassurance POST , my computer shuts off immediately.
Before I continue, I just want to say that I've used the search engine but have not found helpful answers regarding this event. With that being said, I'll elaborate on what happened and hopefully I can get some great feedback.
System
CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K (OC to 4.5ghz)
CPU cooler: H100i (push/pull with SP120 and stock h100i fans)
Mobo: ASUS P8Z77V-LK
RAM: 2x 8GB G.SKILL 1600mhz (XMP profiled in bios)
VGA: MSI 760 Twin Frozr 2GB in SLI
PSU: Corsair HX850
Storage: Samsung 840 128GB SSD and 1TB WD Black
After the computer quickly shut itself off, I knew for a fact that something wasn't right. I open up my case and I am overwhelmed by that electronic burning smell. At the time, it was hard to distinguish where it was coming from so I pulled apart everything piece-by-piece to analyze them.
I instantly dove to my delidded and lapped 3570K after unscrewing the H100i that cools it down. I checked for bent pins, scorch marks, and even took a nice whiff at it; I was spared.
I then continued on to remove my first of two MSI GTX 760 TWIN FROZR 2GB OC from its PCI-E slot on my ASUS P8Z77V-LK. There was definitely a slight burning smell on my card but I did not see any scorch marks or any damaged capacitors from the exposed PCB side.
I had found the source of the burning smell upon removing my second video card. The smell was more noticeable when I smell near the display connectors. However, I did not see anything damaged with the card.
I booted the system with just the first card; all was fine.
I booted the system both cards installed; computer posts and no burning smell was present. The issue is that the second video card is not detected in device manager or NVIDIA Control Panel for SLI setup. Both video cards have functional fans, but one difference that I noticed was that the second video card is now whining or coil-whining. I have no idea what could cause this sound so any information would be nice.
Now I am assuming something is wrong with my second video card. Is there any way I can fix this problem? I have already opened a case with MSI Warranty Services since the video card is within the 3-year warranty period. However, I am not sure whether it will be denied since it appears to be physically damaged.
Do you believe MSI will repair/replace this card considering what happened? They were not overclocked and I only used MSI Afterburner to set a custom fan curve.
Also, if I try to plug in the second video card again, is there a possibility it could damage any other components of my system? I do not want to wait for MSI to simply return a functioning video card back to me because I was afraid of what would happen if I plugged it in to check.
Finally, any advice on my setup would be greatly appreciated. Criticism is always nice.
NOTE: I left the VGA cables from the second GPU dangling in the case because I just recently removed the card and I know once I get back there my OCD will kick in and I would rewire everything. I made sure it doesn't touch anything important.
CM Storm Stryker Case
H100i as front intake instead of top exhaust/intake
Those are the stock H100i fans on the radiator, and AF120s High Performance top exhaust
2x AF120 quiet edition intaking air for the SP120s high performance on the radiator
the original 140mm fan that came with the case as intake
2x original 120mm case fans at bottom (redundant?)
AF120 as rear exhaust
