Why the total amount of RAM for most server/workstation is 3*2^n, eg, 6, 12, 24, 48GB.. But most PC/laptop is 2*2^n, eg, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64GB?
(I know modern computer can be plugged with nearly any amount of memory, but why MOST configuration is like this?)

Solution

It depends on the CPU. Some Xeon CPUs were triple memory channel CPUs (so were some i7s). So to optimize performance on the X56xx CPUs you put DIMMs in multiples of three. If you have a motherboard with dual sockets you should use multiples of six (three per CPU socket).
