Help overclocking CPU first time

Hello

my old q8300 is bottle necking my GPU and i thought maybe to overclock it just a bit but since its my first time I thought to ask you guys what is recommended for my rig, here are the system idle temp:

I would like to overclock the CPU just a bit so my system will remain stable.

SYSTEM:

GIGABYTE P43-ES3G (rev 1.0)
INTEL CORE 2 QUAD Q8300 2.5GHz
2X2GB 800MHz DDR 2 A-DATA Vitesta Extreme Edition
SAMSUNG 840 EVO 120GB + 1 OTHER HDD'S
FSP EVEREST 85 PLUS 500W
CASE: thermaltake wing rs 301
CPU COOLER:Thermaltake CL-P0497

I would start much higher than that, at 380 and keep adding 5 until it fails to boot. Once you have established that point you can start taking 1mhz off at a time until it boots, then start a 1 hour prime95 small fft run. If you get any errors back off another 1mhz and try again.

When you set your FSB to 400 it is running at 1:1 ratio with DRAM. Right now it is 333:400 which is 5:6. When the ratio gets to 1:1 it starts having to overclock the ram too so that usually becomes the limiting factor in a c2q OC after 400mhz fsb, as some RAM overclocks well and some RAM just says no.

The easiest way to OC a q8300 is an fsb increase. The default fsb is 333, mine oc'd stable to 399 but not 400. 399 takes you to 3.0Ghz. You'd be looking for load temps of around 55-60c for this oc, with a good cooler. The current cooler you have might see 65+ but as long as it stays under 70 for constant use you will be fine.

With first time overclockers, my advice is to go into Youtube and type in "Overclocking [name of cpu]". Reading what we have to say is helpful, but seeing what a BIOS screen really looks like and having a narrator speak as you are navigating is more helpful in my opinion.

thank you for your comments, but now I am experiencing some weird stuff I am playing need for speed Rivals on max setting (RES 1600X900)
and I am getting some serious random lags (14-18 FPS) on some parts of the game, so I ran HWINFO to see whats causing that but neither of my : GPU, CPU or RAM is hitting 100% load. so my question is what the hell would cause the lags if my rig isn't even 100% utilized. here is a cap of the HWINFO graphs:

Did you do any stress testing after you ramped up the FSB? It might be you just have to tone down the OC a little bit as it might be causing instability.

Prime95 is the program you want to use. The test is called a Torture Test and you want to do a 'Blend' test for at least 8 hours to make sure you stable. 8 hours is really the minimum, many people would argue its not enough to call stable until you do 12 or 24.

You can use Cpu-z to get readings for your RAM, RAM speed is linked to the FSB. You are looking for, in cpu-z, for your fsb to dram ratio to be 1 to 1 (If you have 800mhz ram). If its not that please tell me.

I haven't overclocked my PC yet I thought to my self if the CPU isn't hitting 100% load on stock configuration maybe it dosen't even need OC. if you think I should post this problem in another forum section please say so.

You have a 7950? You will notice a performance increase with an oc.

Stutters aren't really an issue in games unless you know it never happened before and happens frequently in similar situations. Don't worry about it, probably just a limitation of the whole platform.

Sorry for the delayed response :) first of all thank you for helping me out, secondly I see a ratio of 5/6 in CPU-Z can you please explain how is this data related to OC please? and also how many MHz should I keep adding to the FSB clock to retest? (i.e 333+10/+20/+30 and so on)
the RAM is in DUAL MODE if you needed to know.

when you say "fail to boot" do you mean windows boot?
and one more thing before I start the OC. at the BIOS intelligent tweaker I placed the DRAM performance enhance in "turbo mode" like in this picture I got from google:

should I return it to original state and re enable it after the OC or just leave it off?

I am really sorry for not replying I was just busy lately. I decided to not OC for now and the reason is that I noticed that my CPU temp is hitting 55-60 C under load (stock clocks) so I was left deciding whether to buy a better CPU cooler or leave it as is. as you can see my system is really old so I am not sure if it is worth spending any more money on it.
I appreciate you checking up on me and teaching me new stuff in this thread though.
