Having a problem connecting Astro A40s to my MOBO (no surround sound)

I've Googled and YouTubed to my hearts content and to no avail. As the topics title explains I purchase an Astro A40 (2013 edition) headset to use on my PC and PS4. It works flawlessly on the PS4 and I love the audio.

Unfortunately, when I connect the mixamp to my PC I only receive stereo sound. I've double and triple checked, I have the USB power cables plugged in, along with the optical cable, but for whatever reason I can't get surround sound.

Now I've done some digging around and some people have said a dedicated sound card is required. Others say the on board audio should work.

At this point I am confused and need help. Will the on board audio work or not? If so what do I need to configure?

Hey man, I've come to the same problem! no info anywhere and even Gigabyte is telling me that the SPDIF output from my supposed to be high end MoBo is just a stereo pass through.
How did you solve your issue? I haven't been able to make windows recognize the digital output from the integrated card to work as 7.1 nor 5.1

BTW im using a Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7 MoBo

thanks!!!!
