I have had a PC built as a present, after installing windows 7 professional 64 bit version i have noticed that i only have 2.75gb ram usable from 8gb installed. I have checked the bios - it is recognised, i have checked the msconfig-boot-adv options (all unchecked), i have cleaned the RAM connections, switched them round & still no joy. i have checked my cpu can handle 64bit - thats fine, my bios cannot remap the memory & from the resource monitor there is hardware reserved of 5385mb! yet i have no idea what this is for, im not willing to flash my bios as i haven't done this before & dont want to do this wrong.....my comp specs are below.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40Ghz
Socket 775 LGA

Motherboard DIXONSXP
Model: G33M05

Chipset: Intel P35/G33/G31 Rev. A2
Bios: Phoenix Technologies LTD
Version: 763D3.P03
PCI Express

4 x DDR2 2GB Ram
PC2-5300 (333Mhz)

Graphics: AMD Radeon R7 200 Series 2GB

Any ideas anyone??

Test each sticks and see if they are running fine by itself. If yes, then the issue is either with the motherboard or the processor. Before coming to that conclusion, check in your BIOS as to what it is showing 8GB or 3GB. Do no allocate any memory to graphics or disable it in the BIOS. Another way is to remove the Graphics card, clear the CMOS and then install just the memory (and later add the GPU). Flashing BIOS is a better option if you do it as per the manual instructions then you wouldn't go wrong. Make sure the files are corrupt during downloading (incomplete download)

Try all the above suggestions.

@ Legohouse - i tried the GPU removal, this only increased the usable to 3.34 usable with 8gb installed. the bios is showing 8gb installed & doesnt have the option to allocate memory to graphics. I have even tried cleaning each stick & trying one at a time which work fine, with 1 stick i get the full 2GB Ram but anymore & only 2.75 usable again. I will have another go at taking graphics out & clearing CMOS but if that fails im stuck. i did also look at the flash updates but most websites charge - especially through the Phoenix website.

Hello,

Then the issue might be software related as the BIOS is reflecting the the exact amount. If you can try a Full install of 64Bit OEM version that'll help. BIOS update is not necessary as the BIOS is reading the memory correctly. If that doesn't solve then go with a different brand memory ( Single Rank 2GB 667MHz or 800MHz Non-ECC DIMM or go with double sided memory probably 128Mx16 modules)

I already tried the 64 bit install twice which had led me to think it could be the bios. I will try different branded memory at the weekend from a relatives computer & let you know how i get on. If that doesnt work - ill have to bite the bullet & get a different motherboard or processor.
