I have a modular PSU and one of the PCI-e cables, has a 8[6+2] pin and then a 6 pin coming right off of the 8[6+2].

Now my GPU requires 2 6pins to power it, would I be able to power the gpu with just that 1 cable, or do I need two of those cables

Another side question if it is permitted... My PSU manual has different specifications on the PCI-e power cables I have several that are 12v but some are 12v5, while some are 12v4 or 12v3. Do these numbers matter?

The GPU in question is a gtx 980 sc acx 2.0

The first guy didn't quite get your situation, and I misunderstood you at first, too. Plug both connectors from that one cable into your graphics card, and you'll be just fine.

I'm presuming that's saying 12 volts at 5 amps, 4 amps, and 3 amps, but I have absolutely no idea why that's an option. Or why your power supply manual has so many options. Use what you've got, and if given a choice, use the 12 volt, 5 amp cable.

The 8 pin (6+2) cable you're mentioning can be used as either a 6pin or an 8 pin. And yes, you can use both ends of that one cable to populate the two 6 pins on your GPU. Perfectly normal.

Refer to your psu manual or online documentation to identify the correct cable you need for gpu.

What is the manufacturer and model number of the PSU? As to the first question, yes, you absolutely must plug in power to both of the 6 pin connectors on the GPU(just don't use the +2 part of the 6+2 cable). The second question requires more information in order to answer it. It sounds to me as if the PSU you are using has multiple 12v rails and that is why the cables are labelled 12v3, 12v4, 12v5, etc. However we need to know exactly which PSU you have in order to tell you for sure.

If I am reading your [DarkSable and Bezell] responses correctly I can use this one cable to power both 6 pin slots on my GPU (one with the 6pin portion of the 6+2, and the other with the 6 pin coming out of the 6+2)?
