If you are hardcore gaming with say SLI 2x GTX 980's and power goes out, but your battery back up only is about 600w, what happens to your pc?
Nothing - if the PC is properly constructed.
600 watts is more than enough power for computers. To keep help lines open, we tell computer assemblers that their 300 watt computer needs a 600 watt supply. Then help lines need not teach computer assemblers how electricity works.
A UPS battery typically has a three year life expectancy. After a few years, it may not provide full power. So the computer, like all electronics, simply powers off without damage.
Meanwhile, a surge protector adjacent to a computer can even make surge damage easier. Even that protector needs protection only possible with a 'whole house' solution. Which is also tens or 100 times less expensive. But that is completely irrelevant to the question and to a UPS that is not a surge protector.
