Im about to upgrade my pc and i have 8gb(4x2) in dual channel which is pc3 10600 if i add pc3 10666 on the other two slots will it work properly? Can i just put any kind of ram in it? Like ddr3 1600

I want both the sets of sticks running in dual channel for optimal performance.
Motherboard - Gigabyte z97x gaming 3
cpu- i7 4770

Solution
You increase the probability of an incompatibility when using different speed modules. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it will work but will run in single channel and sometimes it just won't POST at all. When it does work it will downclock atll modules to match the lowest module speed and timings.

It's highly recommended to use modules of the same speed, voltage and timings, even the same part number and optimally, matched sets, when possible.

You will NOT get "optimal" performance using modules of different speeds if it does run.
