Hi, I am Sid
My pc config is
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T
Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB 3
Corsair Vengeance 4gb ram (CMZ8GX3M1A1600C9)
SAPPHIRE HD 6950 2GB GDDR5

I work a lot on photoshop 3ds max MAYA and a bit of gaming too
I am thinking of upgrading my ram to 12gb i.e. i am planning on buying corsair vengeance 8gb(CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10) ram
so i wanted to know will it be okay to pair this 8gb stick with my 4gb ram on this motherboard???

Solution
1 x 4gb stick + 1 x 8gb stick isnt recommended. I would get 2 x 8gb or 2 x 4 gb. The CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10 as a different timing than the CMZ8GX3M1A1600C9 (which is btw a 8gb stick). Get the CMZ8GX3M1A1600C9

thanks for the quick response
I might have got the model no. mixed up!
so basically i got a 4gb corsair vengeance ram
so if i need a total of 12 gb ram then i should get 2 more stickes of the 4gb variant... thats what you mean right!

Yes exactly, make sure they have the same timing and you are good to go.

No, that's not quite it. Your configuration there has a dual-channel memory controller. That means you're best off installing RAM in identical pairs. It is also generally better to install 2 sticks instead of 4 because they will clock higher.

If I were you I probably buy one 8GB kit and sell my existing 4GB kit on eBay. You can also buy another 2x2GB kit and install it for 4x2GB, but seeing as your existing RAM discontinued you may have compatibility issues with whatever you buy.

Now, saying that, that's only talking about optimal performance. You could just slap in any old DDR3, but it's not going to perform as well.

If he installs 3 x 4g sticks of course he wont be in dual channel. But to save money, this is what i suggest. He wouldnt really notice the dual channel advantage anyway. You have the "best" solution but also the most expensive one. As i said i would get 3 x 4gb sticks and he will be good to go as long as he gets compatible ram.
