Howdy,

I'm currently in the process of updating my rig at home...

My question basically involves my processor/mobo in regards to what GPU I should currently look into.

I currently am running a
Intel Core i5-2500 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor
Asus Sabertooth Z77 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard

My old gpu is an "ancient" GTX 540ti so I feel it's about time to put her down.

Been leaning towards the GTW 970 because of it's cost to performance comparisons.

Thanks in advance for all the advice and information to follow.

Here's a link to what I'm looking to update

Solution
You can mix and match as long as they all 970s. If they are different brands it should not effect performance or anything like that.

Hope this helps!

That is a good and solid build, the 970 should fit well with your current build. Depending on what your doing with this PC, the 970 is a good choice. If your not looking at gaming, and are looking at content creation and upgrade to the CPU would be a good pick, but only if your not planning on using this PC for gaming, and for Photoshop and rendering, that kind of stuff.

Hope this helps!

If its gaming go for the GTX 970 its an awsome card and it comes with The Witcher 3 as a free add-on. If you will be doing things like rendering and 3D animation then go for a cpu upgrade. unless you want to overclock. You could still go with GPU if you are doing the rendering, photo/video editing and not overclock but you would see no improvement in those areas.

My main purpose in upgrading is for gaming. I do the occasional graphic design nonsense, but mostly for gaming. Is the 970 overkill, since I can't afford a new mobo or cpu at the moment. (Could afford it, just don't want to throw all that money at it.) Free Witcher 3 doesn't sound bad though either, is that with any 970 purchase regardless of website?

I'm pretty sure it works with any website purchase but just check in the description it will say. The GTX 970 is great card, but if you have the cash get the GTX 980 it is better. the 970 would also be good though.

From what I've been reading online, the 980 is nice but the cost vs the performance isn't all that hot. Since you can purchase 2 970 for roughly the price of a single 980. Thoughts?

I'd need to heavily upgrade my cooling though in order to run a single or even a double r9 though I believe. From what I understand their power output is pretty crazy, maybe even update my old power supply since it's like a first gen Corsair 650w.

Does the actual brand name for the 970's matter other than when you're going to use an SLI format. Like ASUS vs MSI vs EVGA? Or the flashy color additions they've got between them.

Yes I does matter slightly, it really depends on prices are personal choice.

I recommend reading through these:

And also I recommend watching these:

I personally went for the ASUS STRIX 970, because I like the cooling and reliability features.

Hope this helps!
