Programs (on external HDD) Crash when returning from sleep mode in Win8

So, I bought this laptop a few months ago. Everything was working fine. I lately decided to move all my programs (Adobe Photoshop CC, FL Studio 11, Microsoft Office, i-Tunes and 7-Zip). All Applications run as expected during usage. But when I return from putting the PC to sleep, everyone of them crashes. (During Sleep the HDD turns off). I have installed KeepAliveHD in pursuit of a solution, but it has been of no avail to me. Is there a method to keep the HDD from sleeping?? :??:

This solved the problem for me:
a. Click Start -> in the start search field type: Device Manager, press enter.

If you are prompted for access either press continue or supply the necessary username and password.

b. When Device Manager opens, expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers category.

c. Here you will see several USB Root Hub listings, for each right-click and select Properties.

d. In the properties window, click Power Management.

e. Uncheck ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power’, click OK.
