How does Windows 8 compare to Windows 7 for gaming?

I've never used Windows 8 but I've heard some complaining about Windows 8 while researching gaming computers. Some people say "Windows 8 sucks" or "I should have stayed with Windows 7." Why? How does Windows 8 compare to Windows 7 for gaming? Are there compatibility issues with certain games? Or is it something else?



TLDR: Should I get Windows 7 or Windows 8 for my new gaming laptop. Does it matter?

Windows 8.1 with the latest updates functions like Windows 7, but with more features and recovery options. Some games have compatibility issues and bugs that can often be resolved by running them in Windows XP / Vista / 7 compatibility mode, but 99% of games that work on Windows 7 should work on Windows 8.1. You can install Classic Shell to make Windows 8.1 look like Windows 7 with the classic start menu, Windows Aero, and all.
