Hey all, fairly new here. Looking for some information about a GPU upgrade.

Current specs:
CPU - Intel i7 950 @ 3.07GHZ
Motherboard - Gigabyte X58A-UD5
RAM - 16gb Kingston (Unsure about type - info from CPU-Z - DDR3/Part# 9905403-172.A00LF)
Graphics - Radeon HD 6900
SSD - Kingston HyperX 150GB
Also have a Corsair H100 cooling system and my case is a NZXT Phantom.

Although I'm having cooling problems at the moment I think I will have that sorted tomorrow with some advice from another thread.(http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2585136/friendly-opinions.html) In the other thread the blokes helping me out said I could upgrade to a GTX 970/980 and my system would handle it, this is great news but is that the best possible upgrade for my price range?

My question? What is the best GPU upgrade for approx $350-400 that will get me through 2015 and give me a decent boost in games like Battlefield 4 and Hardline?

Cheers in advance fellas, Looking forward to your suggestions and light shedding advice! Teach me I want to learn!

The 970 would be the best for your setup especially considering cost and performance efficiency. The R9 290 and R9 280X are also viable options. They use more power to achieve their speeds which means more heat in your case. But, the R9 290 and the 970 are about the same price. Keep in mind that if you use HWCompare.com it does not properly show the performance difference between the two cards. The power consumption difference, however, is super accurate. The 970 is about half of the R9 290 in this regard.

HWCompare.com I didn't know about this, looks very helpful.

EVGA NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX970 FTW 4GB ACX 2.0 PCI-E 3.0

I think I've decided on the card above but will leave this open for the night. Everyone seems to have the same opinion from what I've seen so far so I think this is a good choice and I found a good price of about 320-350 hopefully!

Thank you for the help and opinions fellas, much appreciated! This seems to be quiet a knowledgeable, friendly community and I'm amazed at what I've had the opportunity to learn in the last few hours! I hope I can do the same over time.
