Cpu high temp while gaming with V-sync off?

Hello all,

And thank you in advance for any answers you give.

I noticed that my cpu, the i7 4790k goes up to about 75 degrees in temperature with 80 degree spikes when I play witcher 2: assassin of kings without v sync on.

With v sync on the temps stay at around low 60's.

I have a 60 hz 1050p screen currently and am using a gtx 770 graphics card, so without v sync i get much higher frames than my monitors refresh rate.

In a few months I plan to get a 1440p monitor with 120hz refresh rate.

My questions are the following: Is my processor hitting high temps while gaming just because I don't have v sync on and my monitor isn't good enough to handle it?
So when I get my new monitor in a few months will my cpu be able to play stuff at regular temps again (60-65 in this case)?

Or will the temps for this cpu continue to be this high while gaming even on my new better monitor? (In which case I'll need to find a solution for the cpu itself, I assume)

Thanks.
=D

if i understood it right :

what monitor you use has nothing to say about what temperatures you get. so with a new screen the temperatures will be the exact same. :)
the monitor "can handle it" when u play, it is just that with more fps the monitor wont show it, even tough the computer has to render these wich makes it go as hot as if the monitor would show it.

i hope you understood what i wrote, if you have further questions just ask my fellow internet user :)

I think you need to mention that Vsync limits the FPS to the Hz rate of the monitor. The user is getting lower temps with VSync on because the computer isn't producing all the extra frames. If you get a 120-144Hz monitor with Vsync on you PC will be now attempting to make 120-144 FPS all the time so you will more then likely see the same temperature with the newer monitor in Vsync as you see with the current one with Vsync turned off.

So I'll get the same 75-80 degree temps with my 120hz monitor right?
Thanks for your answer.

No I'm using a noctua NH-D14 air cooling system.

Maybe I should think about rma'ing the processor?

or is 75 degrees not something to worry about too much?

As long as the PCU doesn't get into the 90's your good preferably you don't want to get into the 80's either 70's is not too bad, though I would suggest using Prime 95 to 100% the cpu and make sure it doesn't get into the 80-90's. If it is not OCed you might want to try reapplying the thermal paste and resetting the heat sink, the D14 are great and should keep a non OCed 4790K under 80 fairly well (high 60's to low 70's at most really), if after the reapply it still gets really high temps then consider RMAing the CPU.

Good suggestion thank you, but I re-applied the paste before coming here to ask. heh.

I also tried prime95
prime95 drives my cpu into the high 80 levels (like close to 90).

Your thoughts? Should I try something else, go about rma'ing the processor, or should I really just leave it be?

It looks like it isn't working properly to me, reviews of the NH-D14 have OCed 4770K at only 72ish Degrees underload, only other thing I can think of before RMA is check that your BIOS is up to date. Otherwise good luck I guess. Sorry can't be more help.

Yup, alright.

I've re-applied thermal paste again, and updated BIOS.
Cleared CMOS too.
No changes. If anything it got one or two degrees worse.

So I'll probably try to RMA it

Thanks for your advice. I appreciate that you tried to help.
