Hi all,

So I've been thinking about upgrading my motherboard and CPU to be able to play games and stream etc.on pretty high end games such as Archeage, and plan to start playing more games as time progresses.

I'm currently running on

CPU - AMD Phenom II 965 BE X4
GPU- Radeon HD 5870
RAM- G Skill Ripjaws 18666mhz 2x4gb
Mobo- AS Rock 880 Extreme 3
CPU Fan - Cooler Master Blizzard T2

Im debating between AMD
FX-8320 CPU with a sabertooth or 990XA-UD3 or UD5

but have recently received advice to go for Intel and can get

Intel Core i5 i5-4690K CPU + ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Performance Gaming Motherboard - ATX, Intel H97, Socket 1150 for only around £20-£30 more

My budget is to hit somewhere in the region of £250, am i doing the right thing here?

I've been trying to do research online, and some seem to suggest that the extra cores on the AMD would be more ideal for running more processes i.e. the streaming, but then some say the the power inherent in the Intel cores outweigh that of the extra cores on the AMD chipset. So here I am, passing it over to some more enlightened beings on the matter.

Any help would be truly amazing. which would be best for my current system? should i be looking to upgrade elsewhere instead? any suggestions = <3

Thank you for your time

The cheaper Z97 motherboards like the MSI PC Mate are not going to give you a very good overclock. You may see 4.2ghz if you use a good cpu cooler. If overclocking is important to you, you may want to spend a little more. I say skip overclocking altogether and stick with a 4590 + H97. That would allow you to spend more on the video card. The R9 280 is very good and easily the best card in it's price range.
Archeage being an MMO, Intel is the way to go. AMD's more cores will only help with Mantle, Vulkan and DX12. If you're wanting to play current games properly and be future proof at the same time, the i5 is superior. I'd only recommend the FX CPUs if you're on a very tight budget. The jump from your Phenom to the FX won't be as big either. So... Go for the i5.

Hi thank you for the speedy responses.
I'm sold on the i5 now, is the motherboard I suggested ok for my ram etc? I don't mind spending between 80-100quid on a mobo. The one listed costs around 80. Saw a gigabyte ga z9x gaming3 for 100. What do you guys think?
Thanks again you guys are awesome

Hello guys, thanks for the support so far. The difference in price between the K chips and the chips you mention is around £30 something I am willing to pay, I am also open to finding a board that will allow for the somewhat best use of the chip. I didn't realize H97 boards couldn't be OC'd mlga91 but thanks for the advice on the GPU, that will be my next upgrade for next month. As for now, I'm dead set on getting a new CPU & Mobo and have put this together as a combo so far that's in my budget.

-MSI Z97 PC Mate Intel LGA1150 Z97 ATX Motherboard (£64.99)
-Intel Core i5 i5-4690K CPU (£173)
- total £237.99

what do you guys think?

I'd be happy to spend +-£250 on the combo

Thanks once again!!

You should be set with that combo! Enjoy the build!

Hi Sora, I wonder if you could help me, going to buy that CPU and MOBO, what do you think about
SAPPHIRE AMD R9 280 Graphics Card (3GB, DDR5) to top it all off?

really keen to get this finalized, and am eternally greatful for everyone's input in helping me throw this money in the right direction.

Many thanks!
