You can't. Range is what it is and whatever standard his router is using can't extend range regardless of any custom settings. Your network adapter might be able to get somewhat of a better signal by replacing it with a model that has an antenna, but probably not by much. If you have a USB adapter you can try using a USB extension and placing your adapter at a higher point, which may help some but probably not a significant amount.

With some setups, this may be counterproductive. Multi antenna, beamshaping...all negate that beer can parabola concept.
