Automatic repair loop and failure to boot from CD

Hi there everyone, thanks for reading.

I have a Samsung NP350E7C laptop running Windows 8 (legitimate copy). A few weeks ago I felt it was running slow after 18 months of use and used the built in repair tool to do a system refresh. This worked fine but as soon as I tried to update Windows the computer started to go into an infinite automatic repair loop on startup. It got as far as flashing up the repair tools for a split second before the computer restarted so I couldn't actually use the recovery tools at all. I took it to a repair shop who managed to reformat the computer and put a clean copy of Windows on but again as soon as I tried to update the exact same problem occurred.

I'm now trying to reformat the computer myself. I have (again legitimate) copies of Windows XP professional and a compatible upgrade disk to Windows 7 that I am trying to use as I don't have the software for Windows 8. I've been into the BIOS and set the CD drive to be the boot priority having disabled secure startup and selected legacy OS but I just get a black screen when I boot up.

Is the HD done in or is this purely a fault with the update process? I don't want to pay another £60 to just be told actually the HD is knackered and he should have just told me that in the first place. Also, any thoughts as to why I can't boot from the CD?

If you don't have the Windows 8 software I recommend you either download it from another computer and put it on a DVD or USB drive or try to work with the built in repair tools. Using XP or Windows 7 will just make things too complicated in my opinion. If you can get Windows 8 or even 8.1 onto a DVD or USB drive then boot to that and use the repair tools you may be able to get it running again.

So if I understand correctly, you got the shop to install fresh Windows 8, you were up and running, but after running Windows update and installing the updates, when you boot again you just go into the repair loop?
