hi folks please can you help, i have new ssd for my samsung nc110 on xp , i am having trouble cloning the drive, some one has pointed out that naming the drive as ide would help....
so how do i change the name of a ssd from sata to ide in bios for win xp ?

thanks

AHCI/SATA vs IDE/Compatibility mode does matter for getting XP to boot. You should not need to make any changes however. Whatever setting the bios had before you put in your new drive should be the same as what it now has. Changing it would make your computer not boot. If you old drive was in SATA mode, so must your new drive be and likewise with IDE mode.

The best solution to this is to install a modern OS that is not so dangerous to use as XP and to copy all of your files over.

Hi thanks for the info, i have looked in the bios and the old drive is ide, so i guess my new ssd must also be named as ide to be found by the clone software?

i have another m/c running on win 7, but hope to keep my old banger running on xp foa while.

do you know how i can rename the ssd?

regards

There is no such thing as "renaming" a drive in bios. Leave the bios alone or you can actually break compatibility.

How are both drives connected to your computer for cloning? Does windows recognize the drive? What cloning software are you using and what is the exact error you are seeing?

The ssd is connected via usb/sata cable; the hhd is still inside the note book.
The software is apricorn EZ Gig IV.
The error is "unable to find device".
Windows finally recognized the ssd drive after formatting it.

A previous question on this forum with me problem, has suggested renaming the drive. Please see below.

Hello DComander1x,

Thanks for the help. I went into the BIOS and by renaming the SSD as an IDE, tricked WinXP into installing the OS. It is working like a charm!
I realize that I will have to upgrade to either 7 or 8, but am holding out as long as possible. Do you have a preference?

Again, there is no such thing as "renaming" a drive in the bios. You can set either SATA/AHCI mode or IDE/compatibility mode. You are ALREADY in IDE mode. AND that doesn't matter for drives connected via USB. You can only break things by messing with your bios. Your problem is something entirely different.

You might try moving some files to the SSD to be sure that it is really connected. There could be a problem with your USB connecting cable. Other have said that waiting 30 sec can help EA Gig detect a drive. If none of those work, I would look into other cloning software like Acronis. If windows can see your drive, then the fault is almost certainly with the software.

Perhaps you should take this as a sign to stop using XP-you do know that it is very dangerous to use, right? Windows 8 actually runs quite well on old/slow hardware. Linux Mint runs quite well too and looks a lot like XP without the immediate threat of getting a virus as soon as you go online.
