Hi,

I am using Dell Inspiron6400 laptop, OS Windows Vista Premium. I am facing issue during booting of my laptop , its showing error message "no bootable device found" .

i checked BIOS there primary HDD is showing as none.

I tried replacing my hard disk with other one but with new hard disk also i got the same message.
I checked my old hard disk in other laptop , there i was able to boot with my hard disk.

Can you let me know what can be the problem or any work around how to resolve this issue.

If BIOS does not report the HDD, does it report the CD drive? Are you certain the HDD you used to test was good? Did you check to see if it was recognized in BIOS?

If you have replaced your hard drive with one that is KNOWN to be good then you most likely have a failed sata controller/port on the system motherboard.

You could try plugging your hard drive into the sata port for your cd drive if that is applicable on this model. There are adapters out there to fit a hdd into standard laptop cd drive ports. But then you would lose your cd drive. It is also not guaranteed to work.

Your other, and more expensive, option would be to replace the motherboard.

A new hard drive will produce the same error because there's no operating system on a new hard drive, it's not a bootable device without an operating system. So that clears that up.

Now, regarding your Inspiron 6400, try cleaning the contacts in the laptop's drive bay by rubbing them with a dry cotton-bud.
Then firmly affix the the hard drive in place and try it again.

i checked all the suggestions provided, but it didnt worked. i feel my motherboard SATA port got faulty. i tried putting the same HDD in CD drive slot there it was able to detect the hard disk. And even in BIOS its showed the 120GB HDD in fixed bay.
