RAID 10 Question - Onboard Controller and How to Break

Hi, I posted a question on a RAID 5 setup a few days ago. I'm not sure if I should start a new thread for a question about RAID 10. If I wasn't suppose to I apologize in advance.

I have two WDC 4TB Black hard drives in a RAID 1. I got a good deal on 2 more drives of the same type. I would like to create a RAID 10 setup. I have a Gigabyte Gaming GT Z97 motherboard that has a Intel Raid Controller that supports RAID 0/1/5/10. Is it possible to break a RAID 10 to non raid volumes if needed? If not, should I use Windows Disk Manager to create a software RAID?

Also, would it make sense to purchase a separate PCIe RAID controller? These drives will not have the OS on it. Thanks for any info.

Motherboard RAID is usually fairly basic, and sometimes isn't even true hardware RAID, instead putting a load on the CPU to handle the processing. I would avoid using software RAID, as this will definitely force the processing onto your processor. A good quality PCIe card is best, just weigh the cost beforehand, in most cases you get what you pay for.

Breaking a RAID 10 into non-RAID volumes will be data destructive. If you want to keep the data intact, it might allow you to break the mirror into two striped volumes.
