I keep coming back to this idea and I need some input. I currently have a Phenom II X4 965 BE CPU and while I haven't had any issues yet I feel it probably is time to upgrade. I was looking at the AMD FX-9370 BE but my problem comes down to if it is worth it just to wait. I hear rumors about the AM3+ socket becoming outdated soon and I don't want to upgrade to be behind.

I lucked out when I bought my current cpu 2-3 years ago and I want to buy something to last 2-3 years in the future. Just so it's said I prefer AMD so Intel isn't what I want to buy.

I noticed you said you *feel* that it is *probably* time to upgrade, or are programs actually performing slowly and your system just isn't powerful enough anymore? (Btw I totally understand upgrading mostly for the sake of upgrading, we are hardware enthusiasts after all.) I know you want to stay with AMD and I totally get it, but I don' think upgrading to the FX CPUs are really worth it. IMO the Phenom II's were some of the greatest CPUs AMD ever made and it competed a lot more heavily with Intel then their lineup does now. They have real cores rather than modules with integer units, and per core, clock for clock, they still perform better than Piledriver (FX CPUs). AM3+ is already outdated. Piledriver is almost 3 years old now. I...

Hi,

If you are encodeing then you would see a increase in performance or if you were playing games that use all 8 cores, the fx9370 will only run on certain motherboards as it requires 240w if I remember what I saw on the gigabyte website, you would be better of with a fx8350 as that has the same tdp as the phenom and that has issues with certain mobos as when it`s underload it throtles back.

Agreed. The Phenom II were a great design when they came out which is why they are still pretty good now. (Still mad at ASUS for being too late on a BIOS update for my M2N SLI, came out a few months after I bought an i7-950)

AMD's roadmap doesn't look too good for the gamer. Basically they are creating a new Opteron class processor (Zen) and then will filter that down to Enthusiasts boards. So the first runs probably won't be economical for home use.

Until then the Athlon X4 860K and two more generations on the 32nm node looks like.

I would expect DDR4 though with the Zen.

Thank you all for your answers and it was really hard to choose a best answer. As advised I think I will just stick with my current cpu at the moment. I hate to admit it but it looks like my next upgrade might be to intel...which means i'll need a new mobo..but that won't later in the future.

@oskerw To answer your question yes I wanted to upgrade for upgrade sake..no issues yet.

@beefy I mostly only game and make youtube videos via moviemaker.
