PC newb here. I recently built my first my PC, and I decided to try my hand at OC my video card. Here are my system specs:
i7-4790K (stock)
Asus Z97-A MOBO
8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X
Sapphire Tri-X 290X (Stock Core: 1040 Mhz/Stock Memory 1300 Mhz)

I am using this guide: http://www.pcgamer.com/how-to-overclock-your-graphics-card/#page-1

I followed it to the letter. I was able to get to the memory to 1440 Mhz without any artifacts, and I was able to get the core to 1071 Mhz without any artifacts. But when I went to run the benchmark, I got a black screen.

Some other info: There is a driver available for my card that is newer than the one I am using, but it is in beta. This is why I don't have it installed. The guide recommends Sapphire's TRIXX, but I couldn't get it to work for some reason. I used AMD Overdrive instead. TRIXX seems to be working now. My card's temperature never exceeded 71C during testing. I don't know what temperature the memory got to. I didn't alter voltage.

My questions: Should I try that beta driver? Will using TRIXX make a difference? Is there a free program that will monitor my card's memory temperature? Why did I get a black screen without getting any artifacts in Unigine Heaven? The memory OC is decent, from what I understand, but why is the core OC so meager? Should I adjust voltage?

Any help will be appreciated.

use msi afterburner to overclock. you likely dont have much overclocking headroom though, maybe 100mhz. honestly for the 290x i dont think overclocking is worth it for the extra heat. but if you insist....

definitely use the latest drivers you can get... they are there at the official owners thread. scroll down there and you will see info on using msi afterburner to stop downclocking, modifying voltage, and other. otherwise keep an eye on temps and use unigine valley or heaven to stress test and benchmark your overclock.

you got a black screen because you lost the video driver... same thing as crashing... the overclock was not stable. you wont always see...

you got a black screen because you lost the video driver... same thing as crashing... the overclock was not stable. you wont always see artifacts. your card may not have a memory temp sensor. dont worry so much about overclocking your memory, it wont help you much. the 290x already has extremely fast memory anyways. save the extra heat output for your core. yes i would play with voltage, stay under 82c or so and dont let your card temp throttle itself.
