What is the point in having an expensive motherboard?

I am building a $1000 - $1200 gaming pc build and I thought everything was good except for the motherboard.
My build (only the main stuff):
-EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0
-Intel Core i5-4690
-G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB DDR3 2400
-EVGA SuperNOVA 850G2
-ASRock Motherboard Micro ATX DDR3

My main concerns are:
-My ram is 2400 MHz and my motherboard does not support that
-My motherboard may be bad quality (I don't know much about motherboards plz help)
-I could get the K version of my cpu which would allow me to overclock but I don't know if my motherboard even allows overclocking and if I would overclock how would my temps be? Would they be bad (I will be using the stock cooler)
-Does my motherboard allow gpu overclocking? (again, I don't know much about motherboards)

I am kind of on a budget so I don't really want an expensive motherboard. Also, I don't really care about looks much; I'm more about the performance of my system. To those who respond: Thanks for your help I would be lost without you.

GPU over clocking is solely Dependant on the GPU and of course if your PSU can handle it. You don't have enough detail on what micro atx asrock board you have as there are many. You will not be able to ovdrclock on a stock cooler so its a waste to get a k version. Go for a non micro just atx motherboard that supports 2400 ddr3 or your ram is wasted. Look for a h97 chip set as it will save you money and provide the same performance as a z97 without the CPU overclocking capabilitys

The motherboards as they increase in price usually have better features - especially in overclocking, amount of ports, configuration compatibility (i.e. being able to fully take advantage of your RAM, CUP, GPU, etc.). The motherboard you have chosen is going to be very limited - and it won't utilize your CPU.

I would suggest using PCPartPicker.COM - here is a sample with a better mobo: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/LG9wZL

i'm sorry i was not clear. but what do you mean by "lower the performance"? does this mean lower fps in games or just less overclocking abilities. Also, is this a good motherboard?: MSI Computer ATX DDR3 2600

By lower performance/capabilities - this could include the number of SATA ports, USB ports, PCI slots, Overclocking capabilities, SLI/Crossfire capabilities and other features. Newer tech drives the high end boards (those $250+) and they are going to be the top performers. Typically, on a performance machine, you can get a decent performing mobo for $100 - $150.

If you watch the prices for sales, rebates and other incentives, sometimes you can save 25% - 40% on the price. Prices are always falling on components, so what you buy today for $150 will be $100 in six months....

to have a good motherboard is always good!
it about the network, audio and more!

if you are using this cpu, you can get msi h97 gaming 3
and if you looking for the batter one, get msi z97 gaming 5 for the upgrade!

More expensive motherboards will use better quality parts, that's why there is an increase in price. They are designed for overclocking and high end performance, so tolerance for stress will be different. Supporting higher frequencies will be easier, the motherboard is designed for overclocking so it will compensate settings better and make things much easier for a novice user. For the advanced user, there are many features that may not be adjustable in cheaper motherboards.

It sounds like OP is trying to build a nice gaming system. You don't need the absolute best motherboard, those are designed for multi-SLI or extreme overclocking, extreme load.

I suggest one of these for your needs:

With everything you got, it will be a killer gaming computer for many years.
