Hi guys,

I'm on 300mbps fibre broadband, using an Asus N56U router. On my windows 8.1 desktop, I'm using a Belkin N300 USB adapter (802.11n, 2.4ghz) which is supposed to max out at 300mbps. On OOKLA speedtest I only get 20mbps. The desktop is no more than 6 ft away from the router and has clear line of sight. Signal strength is at maximum, and there is no channel interference because I am getting much faster speeds on other mobile devices like the ipad.

On the router, I have configured to N only, 20/40ghz, and WPA2-AES. On windows when I right-click on the wifi connection status it says connected at 144mbps. So why am I only getting 20mbps?

Solution
Try running the Speedtest connected to the router via a wire, and see what speeds you are getting. Better yet, take the router out, and connect your computer directly to the modem, and see if you are really getting the speeds promised by the ISP.

That Belkin USB adapter is not the newest, and may benefit from an upgrade for faster speeds.
