do you mean gtx 970 vs r9 290x because they are about the same price and very similar performance. the r9 295x2 is two r9 290x's rolled into one. it's far more expensive than the gtx 970 and utterly outperforms it.

But if it where the gtx 970 vs r9 290x that you actually meant then it depends. the 970 is vastly more power efficient and overclocks like hell but it also has that 3.5gb vram everyone was talking about. This is still more than enough for most games but if you plan on doing 4K then the r9 290x(although one gpu isn't really enough for 4k).

I wish i was rich lol. Im probably more poorer than you i just found a great deal on my pair of 970 gtx. I would 3 way sli but my mother board is a Asus Maximus v formula and only supports 2 way sli. I read somewhere that you can use a program to get it to work in 3 way sli and im looking into it now.

Yeah the only way i would even try it is if i could do it with the motherboard cpu and power supply i already own.

I think 2 way 970 will be fine for running most demanding games on high settings for atleast 2 more years. if you really want something better then wait for r9 300 gpus to come out. if they perform anything like the leaked information says they will smash the current nvidia gpus!

970s will struggle a bit with 4K but u should be able to play most games at decent fps. but i haven't seen many 4K benchmarks with 2 way 970 so im mostly guessing.

The games I played before used more VRAM than I thought. According to GPU Z recording everything, I use 4.7GB or higher for games like BF4, FC4, and DA: Inquisition, but I never really had any major issues when I was limited to 4GB. I did have some fps drop issues though, although I thought that might be causes by throttling even though my GPU was below the thermal limit before throttling, now it might have been because of VRAM (Just guessing/assuming).
