34-42ºC is not that bad, however I run at 22-27ºC when idle with 4690K, so you can definitely improve. Try this:
Try and tighten the stock cooler to the CPU, a loose connection can indeed affect temperature by several degrees Celsius. On my Hyper EVO I got barely 90ºC when running Prime95, I did overclock though, however after making sure my cooler was proplery inserted, my temperature dropped to 49-69ºC when under 100% usage for a sustained period of time. Makes a huge difference. Alternatively, dismount the cooler, reapply a good layer of thermal-paste and then remount the stock-cooler, and make sure it is tight.

Sir Synphul made a great point, ambient temperature can play a crucial role. Just as a side note, I have two overclocking profiles in my UEFI, one I use in the summer and one in the winter - for the exact same reason - ambient temperature.
