Hi everyone!

So I recently decided to put my Christmas build through some testing purely for "I want to know purposes", and wanted to stress test with Prime95. However, as soon as I run the stress test, I would get an instant hard reset. My system is as follows:

Intel Corei7-4790K 4.0GHz (but I see it clocked up to 4.4GHz most of the time, even on simple applications, so I am thinking now I need to double check BIOS if it's not set to OC, though I know I didn't OC anything myself)

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H mobo
G.Skill Ripjaws X series DDR3 1866 RAM (4 sticks of 4GB)
Corisair HX Series HX850 850W power supply
Corsair Hydro H100i closed loop liquid cooling system

(in case it's relevant, single Gigabyte N970G1 Gaming GTX 970, 1 Crucial MX100 512 SSD)

I was reading through forums some, and people were suggesting it's a vCore issue or overheating (didn't think it would be overheating as the reset was instant). So I checked vcore and changed it from the board set 1.236 to 1.250. This actually allowed Prime95 to run for ~30seconds to a minute (didn't time it), and I could verify that neither of the cores at 100% load goes higher than 71C. However, the reset still occured.

I then changed vCOre to 1.255 and re-ran, with a reset a few moments after Prime95.

I wanted to ask (since I will admit this is my first foray into unlocked CPUs) - does it seem like at 4.4GHz the 1.255 vCore could really be low? I will try playing more after worked, but wanted to see what everyones thoughts were.

Thank you for reading! I will appreciate any input!

Mine sits at 4.4 (That`s turbo and not OC, it`s normal) and has 1.280 voltage ... hot as hell while rendering stuff ...72-79°C core temp with a Corsair H80i.

This is 1 hot CPU ... it helped a bit in my case when i selected Sync All cores to Auto not to let ASUS Bios force al corest a 4.4 Ghz and use Intel`s decreasing frequency trough the cores.

The 4790K come stock clock at 4.0Ghz and a turbo clock of 4.4Ghz. It will jump to turbo speeds for Prime95 since you are putting heavy loads onto the CPU. This will happen without you overclocking anything. Typically, you would turn off all power saving options in the BIOS and set your Load Line Calibration to the highest setting when overclocking and I'm assuming you would need to do the same if you're going to stress the CPU to such extents as Prime95 does. Your CPU isn't shutting down due to thermal limits, it's shutting down due to instability in the voltage. In summary, your Vdroop is too much compared to your Vcore. So, do what I mentioned in the beginning of this post plus up the Vcore a little more and you should be fine. If you're running a stock cooler then you need to invest at least in an aftermarket air cooler for this CPU. Ohim is right about this chip being a really hot one and the stock cooler doesn't cut it.
