When I wire my laptop and router to a hub (that's wired to my modem) only one works.

Recently bought an ethernet hub TP-LINK TL-SF1005D and I'm trying to have my pc wired in one port and then have my router (Asus RTN56U) in another so I can have a device wired but still have a wireless network for phones, tablets etc. Initially I had the router connected to the hub and it was working fine but my wired laptop couldn't get connection (invalid ip adress or something) Now I have my wired laptop working but the router can be connected to but has no internet access. I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to this sort of thing, if anyone could give me some help (even if you tell me this can't be done) It'd be much appreciated. Thanks!

Your laptop needs to be behind the router. The ISP will only give out one IP address per modem; your router lets multiple devices use one IP.

The router should have ethernet ports on it; plug the laptop into those instead of the hub.

Thank you! that makes a lot of sense. My issue is that my router seems to blip? all the time and it shuts down my network causing any wireless device to lose connection. Anyhow thanks for making things clear :)

yeah, you don't even need that cute little hub. plug your laptop and other stuff into the Asus, and the Asus into the modem that your service provider is asking you to use. the only reason to use that TP-Link box is if you (a) run out of ports, or (b) need to have 2-4 ports in a single distant location, like a shed, so then you run ONE wire from Asus to TP-Link in the shed, and then connect computers in the shed to the TP-Link.

but always modem to Asus to additional switches
