I'm looking to upgrade my gpu and have decided on the gtx 970. I've done a lot of research and many feel the Gigabyte G1 model is the best one to go with. My only concern is I've never owned a gigabyte card, how do they hold up in terms of build quality and reliability? I was under the impression that they weren't one of the better gpu manufactures.

For the 9xx series, the MSI and Gigabyte are the contenders. They battle for best OCs but I think the Giga wins more than it loses.

Gigabyte's disadvantage has always been being very loud.... not so with the 9xx series. The MSI has an advantage here with its independent fan control.....fans shut off completely below 65C .... as temps rise 1 fan goes on, as temp rises more the 2nd goes on.

The other Gigabyte issue is will it fit in your case....it's 12.28" long versus MSI's 10.59". Some cases the Giga won't fit, others ya need to remove a HD cage.

Both generally use quality chokes, caps and VRMS with a larger number of phases on the VRM than the competition.

Read this article.... you can see why MSI is several steps above the EVGA and Asus Cards..... pay specific attention on each cards review page (2-4) to the lower half where they talk about caps, chokes, heat pipe and fan sizes, VRM phases, use of thermal pads, what gets cooled / what doesn't and the like and you will see why in all the other reviews the MSI gets over 1500 MHz and the Asus / EVGA can not. Gigabyte wasn't in the roundup but they have proven themselves a match for MSI,

Well don't discount the Giga because of the article .... it wasn't included. But yes, ....

Asus owned the GFX card crown with the 6xx series, MSI took it with the 7xx series and Gigabyte / MSI are duking it out for 9xx. Big kudos to Giga for knocking down the noise this round, if they add fan shutoff and shorten the card by 1.75 inches, I'd have to call it the winner.

Reference please. What physical characteristics, design, components used, etc. make it better ? Not being argumentative I just want to see the data which supports this as it what did they do to the PCB, cooling, etc that makes it stand above the competition and what were the overclocking results ?

I ask cause I read two reviews (overclockers, hexus) and which put the FTW boost clock at 1466, 1467 ... and the highest I saw as at hardwarecanucks who got 1518

Guru3D has the MSI at 1501 and the Gigabyte at 1516, hightech legion hit 1567 .....
