Hard Drives Failing

Hey there FaceOfFiath. How are you able to access the drive if it's shown as not initialized? Would you please open Disk Management and post a screenshot of what you see there about the HDD (you can use imgur.com to upload the image)?
You should try the drive with a different USB cable (not longer than 12") and a different computer to see if the same thing happens. It wouldn't hurt to try it with different USB ports as well - 2.0 and 3.0.
If you want to recover data, I'd recommend that you try accessing the drive via Linux Live CD/USB to see if you're able to get your data, or you can use some of the data recovery solutions offered in this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html
If you don't have any data to recover or you have recovered it already, I'd suggest that you download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool to test the HDD and see if any errors or bad sectors pop-up.

Hope that helps. Let me know how everything goes.
