Converting internal laptop hdd to external

I have my old laptop's hdd and i'm planning to use it as an external hdd with my desktop.
but the thing i am worried about is that when i'll use an encloser with laptop's hdd do i have to format my hdd in order to use it or it'll be just plug and play, coz i have lot of data in it that i willl be needing.

No, you won't have to format it. Just pop it into an enclosure, close it up, then connect it to the PC's USB port and mains adapter (where applicable as some 2.5-inch enclosures don't need mains power).

After re-reading your opening post, one other piece of advice. Don't rely on a single drive on which to keep important data.
Back it up ASAP to additional media (eg another hard drive, optical disc etc) or you may well live to regret not doing so.
