Are AMD drivers still really that bad?

I was planning on buying an R9 280 for my budget build (~$450-550). Everything seemed good until I saw a bunch of things about how bad AMD drivers are and how they will mess up a lot of things. Are the drivers really that bad still to the point where I shouldn't get a 280 and get something like a GTX 960 instead? I would really like a 280, but if the drivers are as bad as everyone says, then I might just end up getting Nvidia.

I mainly play Battlefield and Far Cry btw

Drivers are one reason why someone might choose an Nvidia card. The track record is well-established, including the recent 4 month gap without a driver update from AMD. That doesn't mean you will experience any driver issues, but the likelihood is increased, even more so if you decide to go with a Crossfire solution at some point. There is no getting around the fact that Nvidia has a much more robust driver development team and significantly more resources devoted to driver and software development.

So what factors are motivating you to choose an AMD card over one from Nvidia?

The card ATM that I'm looking at is cheaper than a 960, and I've also just simply seen good performance (and sometimes better than the 960) from it for $170

It's also got another gig of VRAM

Yeah, that's a very good deal for a 280. I would be definitely avoid a 2GB card for resolutions above 1080p. The 4GB GTX 960s are all around $240, so that's a big jump.

You do get a free copy of the Witcher 3 with the GTX 960 for $185-$195, which may help with the value proposition. Witcher 3 is a PhysX game, so that may be another consideration, in terms of features that you may or may not want.
