Wireless N/AC question

Hello,

My computer only supports up to wireless-N standard and right now I am using an Asus Dark Knight (450Mbps via 2.5 Ghz and 450Mbps via 5 Ghz).

If I were to update to a wireless-AC router which supports 600Mbps via 2.5 Ghz and 1300 Ghz via 5 Ghz, what speeds would I be getting, only the 600Mbps on the 2.5 Ghz and no streaming via 5 Ghz, or will I be able to also use the 5 Ghz spectrum but be limited to wireless-N speeds, so around 450Mbps?

Thanks!

You'd stay the same unless you buy a new adapter for your computer. Your router already supports better speeds than your computer.

Unless you really need that extra speed, there isn't much point. There's not much your average user does that requires 300+ Mbps.

The only reason to go to 5Ghz is to get away from the crowded 2.4Ghz frequencies that everyone and their mother has nowadays.

I have a 150 mbps router, a 300 mbps and the asus dark knight which is 450 mbps, dual band and even on wireless, the difference is noticeable. On speedtest.com, for the 150mpbs router i am getting around 50 Mbps, on the 300mbps one around 70 and finally on the 450mbps i get 90 download and 50 upload.

I am streaming a lot of remux blu-ray movies via plex from my computer to home theater and to my parents' tv which is 2 floors below me and I wanted to know how would wireless AC work with my mac mini which has only wireless N built it, the speed will cap at 600 mbps on 2.5 and that's it, nothing on the 5 ghz spectrum, or will I be able to use that as well, but not at a full 1300 mbps.

Your mac mini likely does not support wireless AC, you'd need to buy a new adapter that does.

Streaming doesn't need 100's of Mbps to work, it only needs 10-20 even at max resolution.

You can only use 2.4 OR 5Ghz... not both, on one device.
