Hi guys thanks for looking at the post
I have to play games at 1080p resolution and my current specs are:
i5 2320
8gb ram
corsair vs650
asrock b75 pro 3m
amd hd 6770
corsair carbide series spec-03

i want to upgrade my gpu with r9 290x lightning because i am in favour of AMD but i have also seen gtx 970 which consumes less power. but my question is can i run a r9 290x on that above spec after replacing 6770. A r9 290x requires 2 x 8-pin ; 1 x 6-pin, does my power supply have those. i would prefer 970 then if i dont have a choice because i am tight on budget and cant upgrade my motherboard and psu for some months, i will do upgrade in sometime. so can this spec manage r9 290x? i want to have a r9 290x lightning.

Thanks guys
Your comments and help will be appreciated.

ok thanks for your reply but i will be purchasing it in two days so there all connectors will be pinned in the r9 290x? sorry again?
and what is your suggestion 290x or gtx 970, i dont like nvidia much but but i cant ignore 970 i only want to leave it because of the vram issue 3.5gb.

The point is that total power consumption will be relatively high and OPs poor quality PSU is not good enough to run a system with a 290x in it.

Tom's numbers are real and accurate. If you read, then you will see that they state the average usage which is right inline with every other site's gaming usage numbers. The point is that the cards CAN peak to MUCH higher usage than average (over 100watts more) for a second or two now and then and you need a PSU powerful and high quality enough PSU to handle those peaks, which OP does not.

i think guys i have to reconsider it as it looks like a warning tail for me to add a r9 290x till a add a good psu for it. this gives me no option and i have to think of nvidia if i have to buy in a two days span. thanks everyone for your links, knowledge and efforts you all showed. it is quite appreciated by me to have all your replies.

A lower spec PC will not bluescreen usually. It will just turn straight off. Also, it is VERY risky and you probably did/ easily could have damaged components doing so. ALOT more happens when you use an inadequate PSU, especially a lower quality one.

RM850 and RM750 are junk. Stay away. Exactly the same as your VS unit. They use most of the same components.

The Hx and AX are MUCH MUCH better.

Note how both state the poor quality capacitors?

You cannot just take the rating for truth. The poor capacitors cannot be overlooked. This makes the units much worse than the other RM units, which use a completely different platform.

Also, the RM units are VERY overpriced and there is always a better quality Seasonic or XFX or Antec that can be had for the same or less.

It is a no brainer to avoid the RM750 and RM850.

Also, if you took the time to read the PSU tier list we have here, you would see that JOHNNY HIMSELF explained that he does not agree with the review on his site as it was done by their other reviewer OklahomaWolf. I don't know what page it is on, but he blatantly advises against the RM750 and RM850.

I would use a different Power Supply. Since I cannot trust the VS series, considering it has problems with huge loads, I would go with Corsairs AX series.

I was only suggesting a different brand. Chill out. :pfff:

Its his personal desicion. Either way, his PSU wattage will suit him well.
