It's a Windows 7, SP1, I haven't installed any new drivers, AVG didn't return anything.

I tried to run "lodctr /R:*ini, but came back with 'unable to restore performance counter setting...error code 5'.

Would appreciate it if someone would point me in the right direction with this.

http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2545227

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Windows+Operating+System&ProdVer=5.0&EvtID=3011&EvtSrc=LoadPerf&LCID=1033

by reading through the errors it looks like you have registry corruption.
complete the above then, run ccleaner https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download and clear out any errors. run the reg cleaner repeatedly till you see no more errors the close it and reboot.

Solution
no mate its likely installing the language packs. they can take up to 6 hours...
i think whats happend is when you fixed the error windows just continued installing the service pack and updates... whe the language pack on win7 and 8 is installed the screen does go balck for long periods.(its why i prefer to hide them from the update menu)

if all else fails try wiggling the mouse the screen may have gone to sleep. but if the hard drive light is on leave the system running.
