Router Access Point Question

So currently I have the main internet router downstairs. Upstairs we have another router that is set up to be an access point, which basically uses the main connection from downstairs to deliver a stronger wifi signal when upstairs.

The thing is, my game system that is upstairs is set to be on WiFi from the access point router, but sometimes I feel laggy and I was wondering, if I connect it with an ethernet cable to the access point router instead of using WiFi, will the speed be faster or will it be the same since it is only an access point router?

Thanks!

It should be faster and more stable. The AP at that point is acting as a simple switch the data comes in on ethernet passes though the switch chip in the AP and goes to your end device via ethernet. The time to pass though the switching chip in the AP is so tiny it is almost the same as if you had a ethernet directly to the main router.

Ah ok I see, so pretty much I would see no difference if I were to connect the system to my access point with an ethernet cable right? So just stick with it being on WiFi to the access point?

Or were you saying that if I connect an ethernet to my system from the access point that it would be pretty much the same as connecting it to my main router?

You have a ethernet between the main router and the AP and you have ethernet between the AP and your PC. The AP pretty much is just acting as a cable splice....sorta. It should be as fast as if you connected a long cable to the router directly.

Now if you do not have a cable between the router and the AP. Then you are using the wrong terminology that device is not a AP it is a wireless repeater. It might help some to connect via ethernet but not as much, you are in effect using that device as a wireless nic on a long cable.

Oh yea you are right I meant wireless repeater lol, it isn't connected with a cable to the main router. So I should just keep it on WiFi as it is then?

And since it is a wireless repeater, do the speeds get cut in half for all of my devices that are connected to the wireless repeater?

1/2 if you are lucky, it really depends on the traffic loads. Pretty much the more traffic you run the more you lose because the 2 signals stomp all over each other.

Now if you put the device into client-bridge mode then it would not retransmit the wireless. Then again this no different that putting a USB nic card on a really long cable...not that you can go over 15ft.
