Hello! I am looking to upgrade my cpu and was wondering if i would see a significant increase in performance when i switched from my current processor (i5-4670k) to a new one (most likely the i7-4790k). This computer would be primarily used for gaming. If i would not see a significant performance increase, what cpu would you reccomend?

Specs:
CPU: i5-4670K @ 3.40GHz with stock cooler
GPU: EVGA GTX 980 superclocked with acx 2.0
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3
PSU: CX850M
Storage: 250GB Samsung 840 evo ssd
OS: windows 7

Solution
I would recommend the CPU you are using already. upgrading to the i7 will show you no real performance gain. it's defenitly not worth spending 350 dollars.

better save the money and upgrade your rig in a few years. or get a decent aftermarket cooler and overclock your CPU.

One of my friends did a similar upgrade (unlocked i5 to an unlocked i7) and said that he didn't really notice anything. To be perfectly honest, having a system as high end as yours, your probably not going to notice any real difference in performance for most upgrades unless your trying to do editing or 4K gaming.

I wouldn't bother changing CPU's, because you would only benefit from Hyperthreading in applications such as Photoshop and other editing and mixing software. Games aren't optimized for hyperthreading yet, and that's why you don't see a big difference in gaming benchmarks when comparing an i5 to the i7. Hope this helped :)

for gaming, no you wont notice a difference. Overclock your i5 if you want performance increase.
What exactly are you trying to achieve? the i5 and gtx980 should handle anything you can throw at it with 60fps+ with ultra details.
Is there something in particular you have thats not performing well? maybe there is another solution.....

No. U wont see any significant performance diff. The 4690k is same as an oc'd 4670k. U jst need to oc ur cpu to the level of 4690k and it'l perform jst d same.
If u buy an 4690k, it'l b a waste of money.
Gud luck..

You're unlikely to see much difference unless you're loading 4 threads very highly and could do with some more (HT).

In current and upcoming games this is unlikely, given that they still require mainly 1 or 2 strong threads and the load is spread among the remaining alternatives. With DX12 coming you may see more of a performance gap having 8 threads available (i7) - however, this is contingent on developers making use of it, which would require a small step change in their cycles.

In short, at the moment, you'll see little to no difference unless you look at streaming / editing, or something which requires more resources from the CPU.
