4GB VRAM enough for future games?

Will a GTX 980 with 4GB VRAM be enough for many years to come? I want to future-proof my system as much as possible. Will 4GB be enough for SLI? I game 1080p 60hz single monitor.

avoid gtx 970's in general. i am a fan of the gtx X70 series but nvidia dropped the ball and the 3.5gb .5gb frame buffer is a train wreck...even at 1080p with enough filtering and ultra high settings if u bust that 3.5gb frame buffer and use the other .5gb your system will slow way down.

I agree, if i was gonna SLi it would be to new EVGA GTX 960 over the 970's. SLi isnt needed for a single monitor 1080p 60hz gaming. A single GTX980 is more then enough for anything within the next 3+ years on max with DX12 when its out. If you plan on doing Multi-Monitor gaming then go with SLi if not just do a single card like i did. I game on a 27' at 1080p on 60hz myself and my GTX 960 runs cool with Shadow of Mordor maxed.

I agree mostly. there is an argument for SLI for GTX 980's @1080p but for most games (90%) it is overkill...there are a handful like far cry 4 (crysis 3, watch_dogs, saints row 4/gat out of hell etc) where if you want to max out the settings and max the filtering while staying above 60 FPS at all times say for Vsync...then yes 2 gtx 980s can be used for 1080p...that said i would say that would be a very very high end gaming rig. I have 2 980's for 1080p for the reasons i mentioned. I am all about the eye candy. But I understand it only benefits me for about 2-4 titles a year. plus i plan on a 4k upgrade sometime this year...pascal can't come fast enough cause it will kill me to turn things down. i hate doing that with a passion.
