Changing my 750w PSU will 550w be enough

Hi Folks,

I've recently been thinking of changing my Power Supply as it's getting a bit old and isn't very efficient (i.e it's not 80+ rated). My current supply is a Akasa Venom 750w. I got it pretty cheap a little while back, but it's time for an upgrade.

My question is this, will a 550w power supply be enough to power my current system (listed below). And if it does, what recommedations do you have for a good one?

My current build is:
CPU: i5-2500k
GPU: MSI GTX 970 G4
Memory: 1x8GB Geil BlackDragon DDR3
Storage: 1xSSD. 1XHDD

If you need any more information I'll provide as much as I can.

Thanks for reading!

That 650W power supply would allow for two GTX 970s in SLI.

while a high quality PSU from seasonic might be enough...actually probably is enough if it is a seasonic (barely). There is a thing called capacitor wear. Heat, usage all cause you're caps to slowly degrade. the hotter/harder you push your PSU the faster they wear and the more unsteady your voltages become. Personally when i advise a friend on a build i tell them to always get more PSU then they need by 100-200watts. This will help counter act the issue to a degree and hopefully give your system a longer life though there are no guarantees. me i actually tend to do 250-350watts more then i need because i overclock and that wears them even faster ;)

A good 450W unit would be enough for that system, but going with 550W to have room for upgrades isn't a bad idea.

The CPU draws less than 100W at full load, the GPU less than 200W, and the rest of the system isn't even going to reach 50W. Add it all up and you're barely going to break 300W at full load.

Perfect, I'll go for that then. Might pick up another 970 in future.

Thanks for the help!
