I stepped out of computers 4-5 years ago, but now I want to get back in it and build a gaming PC that will see office duty and 1080p gaming.
I've had 2 xbox 360s quit on me in 3 years, and I'm done with console gaming. My house is set up such that I can use my computer and T.V. are close enough that I can use it for gaming, but I still want a monitor for office use... Goals in order of importance are:
1) Durability - no overclocking, and money will be spent on cooling and proven quality components whenever necessary.
2)Budget - I'm pretty limited to $1000-1100 CANADIAN (right now, worth $800 U.S.) before taxes.
3) 1080p gaming/audio - TV is currently 43" but will be 55"+ with 7.1 surround in my basement theatre.
4) I don't want to have to upgrade this in 3 years when new games come out. but I don't mind playing them in 720p

Here's what I've put together so far. Let me know what I can improve on! I'd love to come in under 1000. newegg.ca
FX-6350 - $159.99
MSI 970 gaming MB - $129.99
G.Skill Sniper Ram 2133mhz 2x4GB- $84.99
600W corsair PSU - $79.99
Arctic Silver Thermal Compound - $5.99
Apevia xdreamer case with 5xfans - $79.99
Sapphire Radeon R9 270x 2GB - $239.99
WD blue 1TB HDD - $64.99
ASUS 23"' monitor, gaming, 1ms $209.99
TOTAL = $1050.91

Any suggestions? I've been out of the game for a while, so maybe there's something I forgot to add? CD/DVD drive I have a spare, so I'm good there.

CPU - At your budget level there is little reason to not go with an Intel i5. The 4460 is Haswell Refresh (latest).
MB - H97 chipset (no overclocking).
MEM - AMD systems see benefit with higher frequency modules, but for Intel look for standard DDR3-1600 CL9 or DDR3-1866 CL10 modules. ...both at 1.5v.
GPU - The GTX 960 will require less power and generate less heat. It also has a bit more muscle than the 270x.
CASE - Upgrade this as you please, but keep in mind you may upgrade to a "long" GPU later. Make sure what ever you purchase will fit a current GTX 980 or R9 290x... Also, don't go overboard with fans. You aren't overclocking and the GTX 960 won't generate much heat. The stock fan on the front will draw air in... Add two 120mm fans (with noise under 20 dbA) to the top and back as exhaust and call it a day.
MONITOR - Changed to an IPS panel.
