I have a 1TB WD External HDD and just today I can't access it, it says "you need to format the disk before you can use it". I have 900gb worth of files, I tries chkdsk H: f/ but doesn't do anything when I enter that on cmd it just goes one line below and then nothing.

And also I think it would take days before I can finish chkdsk on a 900GB file size on a 1TB External HDD.

Is there any other way to fix this or perhaps access the files so I can back up the files first before I reformat it.

You should have always had a backup or two of data... make sure to do that in the future at least.

Hmm... if all comes to worst, you might have to send this drive to the pros at Seagate who have their data recovery team tackle bad drives. But first, can you try to see what this tutorial brings up?

This is an external HDD, anyway it seems to be working now after I used testdrive.
here is the link of the tutorial:
http://html5.litten.com/updated-how-to-fix-external-disk-drive-suddenly-became-raw/
haven't completed the steps actually but somehow along the way I suddenly have access on the drive.

I don't know how long I would be able to have access on it, because my HD is sometimes working fine and suddenly it shows the error again and then works again.

Files are big mostly PC games.
I also can't bring it to warranty service as I have some confidential files in it. I am afraid the tech will have access on it.
So i'm kinda desperate to fix this.

Hard drives are strange animals. Next time you have strange access to the thing, evacuate all sensitive data immediately. If you don't have the space, go run to the nearest computer/electronics store and buy another external drive to move the data to. Yeah it's expensive, but it is your decision to weigh the odds. The quicker you react, the better the chances of securing you data. Once you have secured your data, then we can play with the drive and think of solutions.
