Connection Goes From Perfect to Horrible

I have a NETGEAR AC1200 wireless extender which I use for my PC for gaming. I have my PC connected to it via ethernet cable. My issue is that the connection goes from great, to horrible, and it's always fluctuating. I play a lot of CS GO, so having bad internet makes it really difficult to play. I'll be playing with no lag and a steady ping of 45, and suddenly it all goes down from there. My ping actually doesn't spike up that much (goes into the 60s-70s), but the lag is horrendous. Constant stutters, teleporting across the map, people talking on steam chat get cut off. It makes gaming often unplayable for me. My wireless extender has a light for the strength of the 2.4 GHZ wireless signal, and it is green when my connection is fine. However, when my connection goes to crap, it turns red. What is the problem?

The extender works flawlessly when it wants to, it just goes red all the time and I get horrible lag spikes. You don't think there's something I can do to prevent me from getting these lag spikes?

Precisely what I'm saying - they're not reliable.

That's the same reason why using even 802.11ac wireless isn't recommended over a hardwired ethernet connection - one is 99% reliable, the other isn't.
