I heard the GTX Titan X is an outstanding card and better when it is running in SLI, yet I'm not sure if it outperforms a 3-way SLI GTX 980's, but I still want to know which would give me a higher performance in gaming running 60+fps on ultra at 4K, I play loads of games like Battlefield 3 and 4, Metro, DayZ, Arma 3, CSGO, and even Minecraft w/ shaders at 16 chunks render!

Please tell me which of these two sets would be best or close to what I'm looking for in gaming!

I don't mind temperature or any particular flaws with these cards, just performance; but I would be glad to know some extra information! :)

No. The vram does not stack in SLI because each card needs to load up the textures in its own vram to produce the frames simultanously. The titan-x SLI is the good choice for you. and trust me if you want to make a good deal, you wait a few weeks till it comes with a better cooling. if you buy titan-x sli you want to overclock it to at least 1300mhz and within 70C. I've read reviews where the titan-x went up to 83-85C on 1200mhz with stock cooling.
Honestly if i would buy a 4k rig i would get the titan-x sli and build a custom water loop for it. best choice ever

gtx titan -x, but wait with the purchase till the 3d party coolers ( maybe water loop) arriwes for it.
with titan x sli you have 12 gb usable vram.
gtx 980 3way sli you have 4gb usable vram.
nowdays games on ultra and 4k res use around 6-8gb vram. upcoming games will use even more. so gtx 980 is a no-go for 4k gaming.
gtx 980 is for 1080p or maximum 1440p.

im ok with this cooling model on the titan X; but btw doesn't 3 gtx 980's make use of 12gb in total since each card is 4gb ?

This is really easy. I returned 2 x gtx980 classifieds and now have titan x sli. The difference in performance isn't just in the frame rate. The smoothness of games and the constant frame rate with titan x's in SLI is insane. No brainer in my book. Oh if anyone thinks i'm BS. PM me and I'll send the pictures. One thing that I don't like about the Titan's however is the cooler, but i've got ek blocks for them so its not a problem for me. If you want any other info on Titan X's PM me and I'll be happy to help

AFAIK, DX12's VRAM stacking also only works for games specifically programmed to take advantage of it (probably 2016 at the earliest before we see games that has that), so definitely wouldn't count on it.

Also to the OP: SLI scaling falls off a cliff after the second card, so 2x Titan X may give higher performance than 980 tri-sli.

No problem ,titan x sli is best gpu setup available on the market, by far. What cpu are you going to use it with? you should make sure you'll be able to use both on x16 mode it's not a big jump from 2x x8, but still a titan-x sli deserves it :p
