I have a WD My Book external hard drive. When I plug it in the drive shows the letter and local drive. When I try and open it I get the format or cancel option. If I cancel I get the Cyclic Redundancy check error message.
I have tried it on several computers and with different cables and same error. I tried going to Start -CMD and then doing 'chkdsk G: /f' and also 'chkdsk G: /f /r' but it tells me it can't be done because the drive is RAW.
In the Disk Management it says it is healthy and all checks say it is running fine but it is showing RAW there as well and not NTFS like the other drives.
I am not sure what else to try in order to get the data off the drive.
The drive physically seems to be working just fine and I am running Windows 7.
I am not super technical but I hate to pay hundreds of dollars to recover the data but I HAVE to have this data back.

Thank you in advance for all suggestions and help!!

Welcome to the community, Lily!

I'm sorry to hear about your WD My Book external! :(
You should definitely run the WD Data LIfeGuard diagnostics tool that @popatim suggested. Make sure you pass the extended and the quick test and let us know what the SMART status of the drive says.
Unfortunately, the only way to attempt data recovery without spending cash is to try a third-party software. However, I'm not sure that would be a good idea because it might further the data corruption.
I would advise against taking the drive out of the enclosure as well. This will not only void the warranty of the WD My Book, but it will also make the data unaccessible because this exact external drive incorporates a hardware encryption. So don't do it if anyone advises you to, unless you have the same/similar WD My Book enclosure to test the drive there.
I'd suggest to check our Data Recovery partners just in case you decide to use professional help: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Tb1jOn

Hope I was helpful! Keep us posted with the results of the DLG tool!

@Lilly8008, I would use HD Sentinel to retrieve a SMART report from the drive.

http://www.hdsentinel.com/

This will allow us to determine the physical state of your drive. The "Cyclic Redundancy check error message" suggests that the drive may indeed have a physical problem.

Is your My Book an Essentials model?

What is its capacity?

Can you show us what the drive's Partitions window looks like in DMDE (a freeware disc editor)?

If your hard drive is a 3.0, plug it in to a 2.0 hub. If your drive had a password tool on it, google the name of the password software and download it. Once downloaded, it'll reboot. Your drive and the password prompt should come up like it used to! It's contents should be there. I don't know how to make it work yet with a 3.0 hub again, but at least I recovered it. I'm no tech guy, but I had the same exact problem and this worked for me. I hope it helps!

I ran the WD Data Lifeguard tool. The quick test failed and said 06-Quick Test on drive 2 did not complete! Status Code =07 (failed read test element). Failure Checkpoint = 97 (unknown test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 2.
The extended test also failed with the error 08- Too many bad sectors detected.

The model is a WD5000AAV External with a capacity of 500 GB and firmware number 1.75.
There was no a password on it and it is an older one so my guess is it is not a 3.0 version.

I did the DMDE but I am not sure what those results mean or how to post a picture of the results on here.

@Lilly8008, you can upload screenshots to a file sharing service.

Better still, you can r-click DMDE's Partitions window and select "Screenshot to Text File". Then you can open the resulting text file in a text editor (eg NotePad) and cut-and-paste the text into your next post.

Hey there, saberSJ!

I'm sorry to hear about your WD Passport failing. :( I hope you have a backup of the data that was on it.
Since it has too many bad sectors, the best thing to do is to contact our tech support and RMA your drive (if it's still covered by the warranty). This way you will be able to get a replacement.

P.S. Please, edit your post and remove the serial number of your external drive!
In the future, make sure you start your own thread when needing assistance. Old threads are rarely monitored.

Best of luck!
