Hello yall! First timer on here :)

Anyways, I'm requesting help in deciding a new CPU for my main desktop rig. I have recently purchased a used gtx770 from a friend because it was really cheap and my brother needed his own graphics card, plus I been looking to upgrade for a long time.

My previous build was an FM2 athlon 2x 370k clock in at 4.4ghz with 102mhz on the bus on an asrock FM2 A75m-HD+ (Don't laugh, I know it's silly) paired with a gtx650ti. It was a pretty solid machine, but since I just bought an evo212 to help with cooling, and got the used gtx770- and a corsair 750m- from bestbuy after using the price match all for less than 300 hundred for all 3, I bit off more than I can chew-stomach was bigger than the eye without thinking of the consequences.

This thing is absolutely destroying my CPU now, even at above chipset overclocks. Playing games bottleknecks my CPU to 100% while GPU is barely creeping above 36% usage.

My question is, should I buy the best FM2 for the socket, or trying to go with one of the i5-k series and if so which one? I heard the I5-3570k overclocks a wee bit better because larger Dye size reducing concentrated heat, and the i5-47090k just has better graphics chip or something. I'm leaning towards the Intels, but I only have so much money now after such a hasty investment. Maybe around 260 bucks more is my absolute cap. I'm kinda close to a microcenter, so they have i5-3570ks for 170bucks, and i5-4790ks for 200, but all the lag 1155s z77s are like 120 bucks and going up, and the lga 1150 z97s, I found one open-box for 40. (Looking at that one the most)and Im kinda bent on what board/CPU combo I should, or if I should even move up from the FM2 at all, though I would really like to.

I like to do lots of emulation,(dolphin/ pcsx2), and I would like to do steam In home streaming.
I also do game development on the side.

What do you guys think? Really banking on that fast single thread performance above all while also keeping temps low enough for the evo212. Did I miss something or is there a better shot on something I am not seeing? I can't use the current CPU much longer. Its grossly way overclocked for the chipset and the card is killing.

Solution
Your ideal CPU would be a Core i5-4690K. However, this will require a new MB to get it running.

The alternative would be an FX8320 which will be less expensive, but not as fast. It can be overclocked as well, but you will need a new MB for that as well.

I would not buy a new CPU for your existing MB as your needs are outgrowing it.

Yeah, I'm just having a hard time finding a board in the 60 dollar-ish range that can ramp up the clock-rate on the i5-4790k. They are offering open box floor models and some refurbs for around that price, but man is it cutting it. Is there enough difference between the i5-4770k and the i5-4790k to warrant one over the other or are they near interchangeable cause that extra 20 bucks or so could make the difference in board selection?

You need the i5-4690k. The 4790K is an i7 part, and quite a bit more money.

If you are so close on the budget, you could consider a cheaper i5, like the i5-4460. It has a clock speed of 3.2 GHz, as opposed to the 4690k at 3.5 GHz. The 4460 will not be a good chip to OC as well so keep that in mind. Still, it gives you some budget headroom to find a better MB as it is $190 on Amazon now.

Yeah, I meant the 4690k, I was looking at I5s and didn't realize I put the 4790 in there this whole time. I just didn't edit it cause no one said anything so I assumed the knew I was looking at the I5s lol. And I gave it some thought, I really want the K version because the fastest per-thread performance is really important to me. I do emulators big time so every little clock cycle counts. I decided to just go with an asrock h81 board because the can overclock a bit regardless(be it a small one), at least get a tiny bit more out of it and update later. That and the I5 4690k is only 200 bucks down at micro center so 10 bucks cheaper on a non k version is cutting corners in a way that's not worth it in the long run. Thanks for the input though guys :)
