Asus RT-AC87R/USB-AC56 file transfer speeds

Hi all, first time on the forum and looking for some help understanding why I am not seeing any difference in file transfer speeds between my old and new setup. I just upgraded to the Asus AC87R router (from N66U) and also bought the Asus USB-AC56 adapter for my laptop. My hope was that I would see significant increase in file transfer speeds between my laptop downstairs and my USB 3.0 external drive I have plugged into the AC87R router upstairs.

I downloaded and ran the LAN Speed Test application yesterday and here are my results (using 5Ghz connection):

Laptop downstairs to USB drive on router upstairs: 150Mbps Write, 145Mbps Read
Laptop downstairs to wired laptop on Gig Ethernet upstairs: 160Mbps Write, 133 MBps Read

If I disconnect the USB AC adapter and use the wireless N adapter that came with the laptop, I get the following results:

Laptop downstairs to USB drive on router upstairs: 165Mbps Write, 97 Mbps Read
Laptop downstairs to wired laptop on Gig Ethernet upstairs: 36 Mbps Write, 111 Mbps Read

Windows shows the connection between USB adapter ad router at 867Mbps. Are these file transfer results right? How can my transfer speeds be essentially the same using my internal "N" wireless adapter and then the upgraded AC adapter? Shouldnt I be seeing closer to 400/500 Mbps with AC adapter?

Correct. The laptop that has the AC adapter has a 256GB SSD. The external hard drive connected to the 3.0 port on the router that I am transferring to is a 1TB Western Digital Element hard drive. Could the read/write speed of the USB drive be a limitation?
 
it's easy to test if that's the issue, measure speeds against a wired connected pc/laptop to make sure it's not the wd elements causing the slow downs

edit: nvm, i saw now you already tried and it's about the same.

edit2: try disable ips on the router and test again, maybe that's how much it can route, try also to hook the 2 laptops to one another with a single utp cable and retest speeds
