This is a Dell Latitude laptop, older model with Vista. I bought a new battery for it on Ebay, not top of the line expense-wise. (I also put in a new hard drive.) I get a great bright screen, as long as it is plugged in. When it is unplugged, it is way too dark. Can't see much!! The battery meter says it is charging properly... seems to be performing well as far as the meter goes. I turned the "brightness" up and all the other settings to see if that would help. It didn't. I disabled the NVidia drivers to see if that would help - didn't. Same dark screen, unless I keep it plugged in all the time. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem? I'm trying to fix it for a student who has no laptop at all. Thank you..

Hello Thank you. I did try to adjust the brightness in any way I could. I went into the Power Options - tried those but nothing has worked so far. I did notice that there are settings in the BIOS. I've been trying those - not sure how to adjust them, but trying to see if one of those BIOS settings will make a difference. It talks about "Ambient Light" settings for the laptop. Can't figure it out, but still working on it. I'm even considering to upgrade from VISTA to maybe Win 7 or something else that will give me better adjustment settings to work with. Wow, hope I don't have to do that. Nothing is working so far.

The AMBIENT display settings are in the BIOS. I had to read it all very carefully but I finally got it!! I had to turn the settings to OFF, then you can use the Fn + Arrow Up and Arrow Down key to adjust the brightness. All very tricky. I don't wish this grief on anyone.
Thanks for your help.
