Right. So I plan to build a HTPC that can play games *decently well* - By my standards, decently would be getting 72fps on tf2 with graphics ramped to the minimum since it's made for a home theater not a gaming PC but I'm kind of foncused with the processor i should get.
Here's my plan.

CPU: G3258 Anniversary edition (probably a slight OC)
GPU: Radeon HD 5450 (i have one of these lying around already)
PSU: FSP Hexa 500 if i'm not wrong.
RAM: DDR3 4GB
HDD: WD Blue 1TB
Casing: unconfirmed

So I'm wondering whether to go with the i3 4160 or the G3258? I don't know what those 2 extra threads on the i3 give me as opposed to the G3258, since when you OC the G3258 it should outperform the i3 in terms of benchmarking numbers? Why would I even consider an i3?

Thanks in advance! :pt1cable:

The threads for TF2 are pretty much useless. You are correct, if you are going to overclock there isn't much reason to get the i3 over the G3258 for a budget gaming rig in most cases. Sink the extra in to getting a better video card, the 5450 is really slow.

If you are going to have the machine spending lots of time converting videos or compressing videos then it might be useful. For gaming or general day to day use (e-mail, browsing, streaming/watching video, music, etc...) then Hyperthreading is pretty much useless.

Dont forget the G3258 is unlocked. With decent mobo you can easily get 4.5G out of it. At 4.5G it will easily outperform the i3. Even in benchmarks.

edit: so actually you already knew... Confirmed then ;)

I built an AM1 HTPC, that would qualify as VERY light gaming, but its a quad core with the Athlon 5350, I'm, gonna put my Radeon 7770 in there and see what happens one day, but as long as you dont care about playing the big upcoming games like GTA V and Witcher 3, Pentium, cheap and crazy fast
