My wifi speed fluctuates wildly and is a major frustration. Often times the connection drops completely but I will still have 5 bars on the icon in my task bar. Upload speed is marginally slower than download speed but it used to be the inverse. We pay for the highest speed possible in our area but are not experiencing the speeds we have been promised. It's been like this for as long as I can remember, how do I get a stable internet connection?

Ethernet definitely improves the connection but my upload speed is still abysmal. Speedtest.net is showing me less than 1 Mbps.

And even with ethernet I'm only receiving a fraction (1/4) of the download speed that I'm paying for.

The speeds we pay for are 150 down and 20 up. At best I receive 25 down .50 up

I have called my ISP multiple times and they insist on merely power cycling the modem and router.

Check all your connections/cables, make sure they are snug.

I usually do one better and disconnect and reconnect all of them.

Try getting a technical support person at your ISP, not just the general customer service. Tell them whats happening, what you've done about it, and that they need to send someone out to check things out, and DONT pay for it.

I just got off the phone with my ISP technical support and i think we found the problem. I direct connected my Ethernet cable from my laptop to the modem, bypassing my router and I suddenly get the speeds that I pay for. The problem must be either a) my router, b) the other Ethernet cable, or c) the Ethernet port on the router.

I was wondering if I can hook up the ethernet cable from the modem to any port on my router or does it have to be the one labeled "internet"? can I use any of the ethernet ports labeled "LAN 1(2,3,4)"?

Also, if I were to need a new ethernet cable, any suggestions on brands I should get?
