Time to get rid of my CD-ROM drive?

I'm considering a smaller form factor PC build soon, therefore, discarding my CD drive.

I notice that a lot of new cases don't have bays for CD drives and I hardly ever use mine anymore. But Windows and Office (for example) still come on retail CD. Would I be inconveniencing myself if I finally decided to say goodbye to my CD-ROM drive?

I personally like having the ability to use a disc, however, I understand the aesthetics of not having one and the limitations of SFF.

The incovenience is minimal. You just need access to an external disc drive if you want to install from a disc. You can get one for $20 and pull it out whenever you need it and store it the rest of the time. It will most likely be slower but will still get the job done. Unless you are constantly installing disc based software it will collect dust for the most part.

You could also potentially load an ISO file onto a USB stick or the like and install from there but that is a different discussion.

It makes for a cleaner look for sure.
